How much rain does your roof catch?

Most of it runs off into the street and you pay the water company for more. Here's roughly how much you could keep. Cuánta agua podrías guardar.

You could catch about

gallons a year

gallons per 1″ rain
55-gal barrels per 1″

Rough math: roof area × rainfall × 0.623 gallons per square foot per inch, times about 85% to account for splash, first-flush, and gutter losses. A real catchment system sizes the storage to your rain pattern — that's the part I design.

That water is free, soft, and chlorine-free — good for a garden, a tank, or recharging the ground instead of flooding the street. Catching it is the first move in building a place that holds its own resources.
